Upfront embodied carbon covers the emissions from materials, transport and construction before a building is occupied. This stage can account for up to 80% of a building's lifetime embodied emissions.
The NABERS Embodied Carbon rating gives you a certified measure of your building's carbon intensity. It lets you compare your project against similar buildings with a nationally recognised government rating, not a self-reported estimate.

Eligible Buildings
A rating can be issued after practical completion, and up to two years after the build is complete. Eligible building types include:

1. Design Stage Estimate
We use the NABERS rating calculator to model your project's expected upfront embodied carbon, showing you where the biggest reduction opportunities are while design decisions are still open.
2. Evidence and Documentation
We work with your quantity surveyor, builder and project team to gather the required evidence, including material quantities, product data and building details.
3. Assessment and Verification
Your assessment is completed by a NABERS Accredited Assessor under the current NABERS Embodied Carbon Rules.
4. Certification
The rating is lodged with NABERS for certification. You decide whether the result is published publicly or kept private.
