VURB Assessments Australia

Reference Building Energy Compliance for Residential Projects

VURB availability depends on the applicable jurisdiction and approval pathway. For NSW residential projects, Senica can advise on the appropriate BASIX, NatHERS and NSW energy-efficiency requirements.

Senica provides VURB Assessments and reference-building energy compliance advice for eligible residential projects across Australia, with strong service coverage across Victoria, Queensland, Brisbane and the Gold Coast.

Integrated energy efficiency, sustainability and development compliance expertise delivered through one consultancy team.

What is a VURB Assessment?

VURB stands for Verification Using a Reference Building. It is an energy compliance pathway that compares the proposed building with a compliant reference building to demonstrate whether the proposed design achieves an equivalent or better energy performance outcome..

Rather than relying only on prescriptive Deemed-to-Satisfy requirements or a standard energy rating pathway, VURB uses energy modelling to compare the proposed design against a reference benchmark.

This can provide greater flexibility for residential projects where design features, glazing, orientation, ceiling heights or building fabric make standard compliance pathways more difficult.

When Is VURB Suitable?

VURB may be considered where an eligible residential project requires a flexible energy compliance pathway and where the applicable jurisdiction allows reference-building verification.

It may be useful for projects with extensive glazing, raked ceilings, complex design features, unusual orientation or other characteristics that create challenges under prescriptive or standard assessment pathways.

The suitability of VURB should be reviewed early so the project team can understand the most appropriate energy compliance strategy.

VURB and Jurisdiction Considerations

Because VURB availability depends on the adopted compliance pathway and jurisdiction, it is important to confirm suitability before relying on this method.

Senica provides Australia-wide energy efficiency assessment advice and can help project teams determine whether VURB, NatHERS, DTS, J1V3 or another pathway is most appropriate.

For NSW residential projects, Senica can advise on applicable BASIX, NatHERS and NSW-specific energy-efficiency requirements.
